Bluesfest!

Well folks, we’re very happy to report that The Ethics will be playing the 2012 edition of the Ottawa Bluesfest. We recently learned that we will be playing on Sunday July 15 on a little stage called the ‘Main Stage’. Having volunteered or at least attended this festival for most of the past 15 or so years going back to the original Labreton Flats days, I must say this is a huge honour and we couldn’t be more excited about it. The festival has really been a musical education for a lot of us and it’s provided an opportunity to see so many artists that have had a big impact on what we do. Van Morrison, Bob Dylan, James Brown, Sting, Arcade Fire, The National, Calexico, Wilco, just to name a few of the innumerable highlights that come to mind thinking back over the years. I’m sure this year’s festival will bring many new highlights, and we are really really looking forward to being part of it.

Irene’s with The Gertrudes – March 10

The Ethics return to the stage at Irene’s on Saturday March 10. We’ll be joined by Kingston’s The Gertrudes. They are a folky collective we’ve been hearing good things about for several years now and we look forward to meeting them and sharing the bill.

Since our last post here, our album What I Did for Modern Love was released. We’re pleased to report that it made several year-end critic’s pick lists, including this mention in the Ottawa Citizen’s top ten Ottawa indie releases:

There’s no lack of either hooks or harmonies in the folky pop-rock songs of Kevin Hersak and his band. What’s more, the album captures the groove of a band known for its solid live show, something that was not as effectively conveyed on their past recordings. Also contributing to the filledout sound is the addition of a keyboardist to the core lineup.

Downstairs Club with No Fly List – November 12

The Ethics will be in concert this Saturday night with s/g No Fly List at the Downstairs Club at the Clocktower Pub in Ottawa (575 Bank St). $ 8 cover (no advance tix).

Fresh off exciting album launch shows in early October, The Ethics will be performing material from the brand new album What I Did For Modern Love – now available on iTunes & Bandcamp - as well as both Compact Music locations in Ottawa.

Off to Montreal

Thanks for a great time at The Rainbow last night! We really had a blast and launched the new album in fine form with great company.

Rainbow w/ Meredith Luce Oct 14 Album Release

As we’ve mentioned at recent shows and here on the site, we’ve recently wrapped up our third studio album and will be releasing it in style with a big show at the legendary Rainbow Bistro in the Byward Market on Friday, October 14.

These are exciting times for the Ethics. We are very happy to announce the upcoming release of our third album, What I Did For Modern Love. It was recorded this past spring in Ottawa and we’re very proud of the results. It will be released on CD in a nice digipack – we’ve just recently received the shipment of discs from the manufacturer and they look hot! – and as a digital album.

The official release party will be on October 14 and we’ll be celebrating at The Rainbow in Ottawa, with special guests Meredith Luce and her band. Stay tuned for more details about the album and release over the next few weeks.

Irene’s with Royal Ottawa – July 9

We return to Irene’s Saturday July 9 to share the stage with Royal Ottawa. We were blown away by these guys last fall and can’t wait to share the stage with them again. Cover will be $7.

Irene’s is at 885 Bank Street. The street is under construction but don’t worry, there’s free parking available at Landsdowne, one block South.

Raw Sugar with Slow Down, Molasses and Jeans Boots – March 30

Slow down, Molasses started over the summer of 2006, at first it was just a few quiet songs and day dreams of lost blues and ocean songs. A couple tepid attempts at solo shows were made, Neil was covered, so was Low. Between these shows and a few too many late night’s out like minded co-conspirators were found, first drums, and keyboards, soon enough bass and banjo, lap steel and violin. Now a seven piece consisting of members & ex-members of some of Saskatoon’s finest bands, there are still the same quiet melancholy songs, but now the occasional noisy excursion or anthemic build appears, letting lo-fi indie rock songs and alt-country rave ups sit nicely next to late night lullaby’s and a lazy falsetto drawl.
