As Ottawa Magazine has kindly pointed out, this will be a great chance to hear the “Ottawa sound”, if there ever was one, in full effect.

Raw Sugar with Slow Down, Molasses and Jeans Boots – March 30

Slow down, Molasses started over the summer of 2006, at first it was just a few quiet songs and day dreams of lost blues and ocean songs. A couple tepid attempts at solo shows were made, Neil was covered, so was Low. Between these shows and a few too many late night’s out like minded co-conspirators were found, first drums, and keyboards, soon enough bass and banjo, lap steel and violin. Now a seven piece consisting of members & ex-members of some of Saskatoon’s finest bands, there are still the same quiet melancholy songs, but now the occasional noisy excursion or anthemic build appears, letting lo-fi indie rock songs and alt-country rave ups sit nicely next to late night lullaby’s and a lazy falsetto drawl.

Where should we play next?

We’re looking for your help to decide where we should aim to play our next Ottawa gig. The Ethics have been playing around this town for several years now and we’ve enjoyed playing different rooms at different times, and for different reasons. Our Bluesfest gig this past summer at the Barney Danson Theatre takes the cake for best sound and lighting, but it’s a special treat to play in a soft seater theatre and gigs like that don’t come around too often. We tend to gravitate towards a few pub and club venues in Ottawa for our full-band shows, and the ones we keep coming back to are Babylon (for big shows like our two album-release parties), Irene’s (so cozy, and always a great night), The Rainbow (awesome vibe, novel second floor balcony), and the Black Sheep Inn (pretty much speaks for itself). We have also had good experiences with recent gigs at Maverick’s and the Elmdale House.

But what we really want to know is where you want to see us play. Is there somewhere we haven’t played that we should check out? Somewhere we have to revisit? Let us know using this poll, and the comments section below…

Mavericks Sept 28 w/Villagers and Winchester Warm

Kev and Jeff will be playing an Ethics ‘duo’ show opening for Mercury prize nominees Villagers (Ireland) at Mavericks on Sept 28. Our good friends Winchester Warm are also opening.

We recently stumbled across the NPR online feature Tiny Desk Concerts and really enjoyed this one from Villagers.

Should be a really great night.
